Mark Wielaard: New GPG key.
Finally created a new GPG key using gnupg. The old one was a DSA/1024 bits one and 8 years old. The new one is a RSA/2048 bits one. I will use the new one in the future to sign any release tarballs I might create. pub 2048R/57816A6A 2011-01-29 Key f...

Grids, Portals and Co-chairs
UCLA's Visualization Portal is truly remarkable. Equally remarkable is one of its primary developers and managers, Kejian Jin. Among his projects are vrNav, a 3D VR simulation program, and the UCLA Grid Portal. I had the pleasure of meeting with Kejian and Jackie Reynolds (Director of Campus Services) some time ago at UCLA's Visualization Portal to discuss his acting as co-chair of the UCLA JUG. The Portal was the perfect example of why I knew he'd make an excellent co-chair.
Java is the core component of the VR GUI used by the Visualization Portal. As described by the UCLA website for the portal:
"The Visualization Portal and facilities like it are commonly referred to as virtual reality rooms or immersive environments. The term 'virtual reality' was coined in 1989 by Jaron Lanier (founder of VPL Research) and referred to the ability to immerse a person in an artificial, computer-generated, three-dimensional world. A variety of methods of achieving immersion have been developed, each with inherent strengths and weaknesses. The spherical screen used in the Portal offers a good balance between immersion (it provides a moderate amount) and visibility for a larger audience (up to 45 people)."
"Along with the large spherical screen, the Portal offers high performance computing for running and displaying large datasets. These two elements - top notch display and computing technologies - are key to successf...
